Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known by his stage name Medikal, is a Ghanaian rapper and hip hop musician born on April 5, 1994, in Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra, Ghana, to parents James Frimpong and Portia Lamptey. Medikal initially pursued a career in football, playing professionally for the Ghana Premier League team Sekondi Hasaacas, but later transitioned to music, where he discovered his passion for rap and hip hop. He adopted the stage name “Medikal” due to his fascination with rapping about medical practitioners, doctors, and hospitals, a theme that inspired the early stages of his artistic identity.

Medikal officially began his music career in 2013 and has since become one of Ghana’s leading hip hop artists, known for his fast-paced rap style, witty wordplay, and creative incorporation of Pidgin English and local slang. He has released several albums and EPs, including Medikation (2013), Disturbation (2017), The Plug EP (2019), Island (2020), The Truth (2020), and Planning and Plotting (2023), each showcasing his growth as an artist and his versatility in music production. Some of his notable singles include La Hustle, Odo, ABONIKI FLOW (2025), and KALA, among others.

Throughout his career, Medikal has received numerous awards and nominations. He won the Best Discovery Video at the 2016 MTN 4Syte Music Video Awards and has since earned multiple accolades, including Hiplife/Hip Hop Artist of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and 3Music Awards, Most Streamed Act of the Year, and recognition for his influence in Ghanaian music. He has also collaborated with leading artists such as Joey B, Criss Waddle, and King Promise, further solidifying his position in the industry.

On a personal note, Medikal married entrepreneur and actress Fella Makafui in 2020, though the couple announced their divorce in May 2024. His career has not been without controversy; in 2021, he was arrested for brandishing a gun on social media and was later granted bail after being remanded for five days. Despite challenges, Medikal continues to be a prominent figure in Ghanaian music, known for his energetic performances, lyrical dexterity, and significant contribution to the growth of hip hop and hiplife in the country.
